China now world's biggest energy user
China has passed the United States to become the world's biggest energy user, according to the International Energy Agency.
However, Chinese officials say that the IEA's data are unreliable.
One long-term factor behind this development is China's population - more than four times that of the US - with a growing appetite for consumer goods that need energy to use and to manufacture.

BP could try an poeration by this weekend to permanently seal its breached Gulf of Mexico oil well -- but only if the weather cooperates and BP gets a crucial casing in place, the government's point man on the oil spill said Wednesday.
The tactic, called a "static kill," involves pumping mud into the well to torce oil back into the reservoir below.
Officials have said the relief well provides another option if the "static kill" doesn't stop all the flow of oil.

Japanese voters handed a stinging electoral defeat to the ruling party Sunday, exit polls showed, rejecting a proposal to increase taxes and handicapping a fledgling government struggling to keep the world's second-largest economy from financial meltdown.
With public spending at more than double its GDP, Japan is trying to manage its ballooning debt while also addressing high unemployment and stagnant growth. Prime Minister Noto Kan has warned the country could face a Greek-style meltdown it it does not get its finances in order-possibly by raising the sales tax.
But projected losses in elections for the upper house of parliament indicate voters have rejected his solution, and will make it difficult for his government to effectively revive the economy. (AP 7/11)
